Captains Report May 2005
|
|
Favourable weather and excellent management have both contributed to our course being in wonderful condition. The rains in April should result in us having the best winter course for some time. Thanks to Alan, Jackie and the team for all that they have done.
Since the AGM, Ian Finlay has taken over as Vice Captain. Ian has been a solid member of our Club for many years, has served on the committee and is a “Wanderers man” through and through. I look forward to working with him. Our thanks go to Greg Carver who stood down after a year as Vice Captain due to work pressures. In Greg’s short term he proved to be highly competent and brought a very positive approach to all that he did. It is our hope that he will again serve the Club at a more convenient time.
The course was in immaculate condition for our very successful Club Championships with the scores reflecting a 'track' that is playing a bit tougher than has been the case in previous years. We had 113 A division and 83 B division players competing which is a very pleasing participation rate when compared with other clubs. Due to bad light we were unable to complete the play-off and the championship is shared this year amongst three really good players, namely, Norman Raad, Neil Holman and Morgan Holmes, all having shot 142. Morgan had the previous week won our Junior Championship. Jason Lamb had two great rounds of 80 each off a handicap of 10 to win the B-division with a gross of 160. Congratulations to all concerned.
Junior Golf Junior golf has always had its challenges at the club. However, Chippy Wood and Rob Meydel have done a sterling job for the youngsters over the last few years and we record our thanks to them. This year's championships had close on 50 juniors playing with every participant receiving a prize. Chippy is currently managing a new initiative which will target schools and hopefully entice juniors to play in “mini tournaments” roughly once a month on Monday afternoons. Lenn and Paul have lent their support, which means there will be a basic coaching component added to the Monday afternoon programme. We wish Chippy well and hope that this will be a successful venture and one that will benefit the Wanderers in the medium/long term.
Clubhouse and Course All our enhancements to the clubhouse should be finished by the middle of May and I am sure you will agree that they have been worth waiting for. My thanks to those involved in managing these developments and to Duncanrig Construction for being tidy, accommodating and efficient. They were also two months ahead of schedule.
Once the club house facilities have been completed and our cash flow confirmed we will immediately focus on course developments. We have a “Master Plan” which has been designed and drawn up by Rob O’Friel in consultation with Alan Fieldgate and the committee and it is our intention to present aspects of the plan at a meeting which will be called within the next six weeks. The proposals for the water storage on the 10th will be presented and work could start as soon as June/July of this year. Once increased storage capacity is in place we will be able to accommodate the installation of a double-line irrigation system which should radically improve the condition of the course year round.
2005 Diaries - We have a diary that reflects the status of our club I would like to congratulate Jeff Owen for the quality of our 2005 diaries. We have a diary that reflects the status of our club. I would also personally like to thank all the advertisers who contribute to this newsletter that Jeff also produces bi-annually for us. The only way this can be published at no cost to the club is by members supporting it with advertising. The cost of an advertisement is roughly the same as a good business lunch.
Obituaries To the family and friends of Pat McKenna, Jules Gardner and Stephan Marais who passed away this year, we extend our heartfelt condolences.
