Steel or Graphite

As a rule of thumb most golfers should look at playing with a Graphite shaft for their Driver and Woods. Why? Because lightweight graphite shafts provide club designers the freedom to create bigger, more forgiving club-heads with larger sweet spots. And, lightweight composites enable golfers to generate more clubhead speed while providing a smoother, solid feel at impact. The combination of the lighter shaft and the new head designs generate greater distance.

The #1 Steel Shaft for better golfers in the US.
The same benefits apply in the Irons and for the average golfer Graphite shafts in these clubs should be favoured.

For the better golfer though, steel is the preferred choice. Why? Because steel shafts are more consistent than graphite, providing superior control. Additionally robot tests confirm that steel shafts reduce club-head twist at impact. The result...a more controlled ball flight with increased accuracy.

There are advances taking place that will be of great assistance to the average golfer though. Adams Golf in the nineties introduced the concept of a combined Steel and Graphite shaft. True Temper have taken this further with BIMATRX technology.

Through patented design and manufacturing processes, True Temper has combined a high modulus graphite shaft with a specially engineered steel alloy tip.

The result is a lightweight shaft with the consistency and torsional stability to hit the ball longer and straighter. So it’s no longer a choice of just graphite or steel.
