Wanderers Golf Club Championship 2011

Last year after battling with all the rain, Central Gauteng Golf Union took the decision to move the annual Club Champs date from March to April, in order to have better weather for the championship and to allow all clubs to complete their champs on the same weekend. Well true to club champs form the weather did not play its part and once again rain was the order of the day.

After assessing the golf course at 6am on Saturday, we took the decision to play as the greens were playable and with the casual water rule, the golfers would be able to find dry ground to play off the fairways. The rain kept falling and stayed with us for the entire day, creating less than perfect conditions for the golfers. After a grueling 5 hours of difficult wet conditions, our leader after round 1 was Roger Stubbs with a fantastic score of 71, followed closely by Shaun Stapleton on 72. Our B Division leader after the first round was Nash Camaroodien who posted a very good score of 80.

Our C Division golfers teed off in the afternoon, although the rain held up at times, the course was very wet and conditions got tougher through the day. Some great golf and some not so great was played and our C Division Champion on a score of 32 points is Ross Allan, followed by Warren Rex on a score of 31 points. Well done guys.
Sunday we were greeted with sunshine and after Jackie and his team had mopped up the wet areas, play was underway and uninterrupted. Mark Schoombie held the clubhouse lead in the B Division with a pair of 82's, leaving Nash a score of 164 to beat. Nash narrowly missed his birdie putt on the 9th hole and returned a second round score of 84, tied with Mark and the b Division champ was left to the count out where Nash managed to sneak ahead of Mark by 1 shot.

With playing conditions still being tough for the A Division, Shaun Stapleton managed to build a 2 shot lead on Roger Stubbs with 9 holes to play. Shaun and Roger battled it out on the back nine and some great golf from both guys resulted in a final score 76 for Roger and 72 once again for Shaun.

Well done Shaun on winning the Club Championship and again well done to all who completed 36 holes in conditions that at times were more than trying on even the most patient golfers in the club.
