Flanagan claims home win in Asian Q-School Race

JOHANNESBURG, 2 October 2014 – Bryn Flanagan snatched the final spot in the IGT Tour’s Race to Asian Q-School Series when he thrilled the local supporters with two stroke victory at his home club on Thursday.

The recent University of Houston graduate shared the overnight lead at three over with John McClean from Northern Ireland and local amateurs Rosswell Sinclair and Simon Kruge.

While his co-leaders fell away, Flanagan was the picture of consistency at Wanderers Golf Club. He birdied the two par-fives on the back nine to expunge bogeys at the eighth and 12th before parring his way to an even-par 71 to triumph at three-over-par 216.

DK Kim from Korea fired a 69 to claim a share of second on 218 with Sinclair, who returned a 73 and Krugersdorp amateur Calvin Caldeira took fourth on 219 with a final round 73.

Flanagan was thrilled to seal his first victory on the country’s premier development Tour just two months since his return from the United States.

“What a home coming,” the 23-year-old Johannesburg amateur exclaimed. “It was absolutely brilliant to win here at my home club. I went down with a stomach bug yesterday and I was a little worried about today, but it turned out even better than I expected.”

The Wanderers amateur spent the last four years in Houston and graduated with a degree in Sports Administration in July. “The last four years were fantastic and I had a lot of highlights with the Cougars, like winning the American Athletic Conference last year and making the NCAA Championship,” he said. “But I’ve ticked the education box and now I’m looking forward to turning pro.” Flanagan planned to play a few local amateur events and compete on the IGT Tour to prepare for the Sunshine Tour’s Qualifying School next year.

The Race to Asian Q-School Series victory has thrown up another option, though. The IGT Tour is sponsoring eight Race to Asian Q-School winners, including Flanagan, JC Ritchie, Lean Boezaart, Hendrikus Stoop, Pieter Kruger, Tyron Mc Comb, CJ du Plessis and Werner van Niekerk to the tune of R360,000 to compete in the Asian Tour’s Qualifying School early next season.

“The IGT Tour will cover our flights, accommodation, transport and entry fees; all we have to do is show up and play,” Flanagan said.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity and I’m definitely going. It’s hot and humid in Asian, but I’m used to it after four years in Houston, so I don’t think the conditions will bother me.

“I’m really stoked to have this opportunity. Guys like Jbe’ Kruger, George Coetzee, James Kingston and Keith Horne all went the Asian Tour route and it got them on the European Tour.

“You never know, if I have a great week, I could be playing the Asian Tour next year.”

With the Race to Asian Q-School series now wrapped up, the IGT Tour is already gearing up for the nine-tournament Race to Sunshine Q-School Series, which launches at Coro Creek from 8-10 October.
