It's A Boy... Last week we had our bird expert, Dr Russell from the Bryanston Veterinary clinic, come down to the club and take blood from our lone swan in order to sex him. We have now had confirmation from the lab that he is intact a boy and we can now get a little girl as a mate for him. Our ladies section have sponsored our new swan mate and we have one on order, all things being equal we will be able to collect next week and get the 2 birds together. (See separate item and photo of them together.) According to the experts, swans only reach sexual maturity at around age 2. As our boy is now 8 months old, he is now at the best age to start settling down and will take easily to his new mate. Swans do mate for life and we will…

Castle Lite Nearest to the Pin

Tuesday, 07 June 2011
Castle Lite Nearest to Pin Last week Thursday, the Castle Lite Nearest the Pin was won by Neil "Spanner" Ransome. Well done Neil, I know you are going to enjoy your ice cold Castle Lites. Thanks - Lenn.
Update on drainage of the 12th hole As you are all aware, we have had excessive water for the past 2 seasons now and the result is that the water table is so high that the water has nowhere to go and has created wetland type areas on our golf course. One of the worst affected areas has been the 12th hole and getting from the tee to the fairway has posed some challenges of late. The good news is that Jackie and Darran have come up with a solution whereby they have an open trench in the area between 12 and 13, this area being out of play has allowed them to dig an open trench and to get the water moving down to the fairway across 12 where they have linked a pipe under the fairway and connected it to the drainage into 11 dam. Already I can…

SAMS Winter Frolic

Friday, 27 May 2011
SAMS Winter Frolic The second of this year’s SAMS majors was played last week on a very pleasant Johannesburg winter morning. As expected, the guys were up and ready early to take on the field and to compete for the bragging rights of the 2011 Winter Frolic Champions. With the cold front having moved up from the Cape, the timing of Winter Frolic was superb, where else in the world can you play a winter round of golf in short sleeves and perfect sunshine, not to mention being able to round the day off with a few cold ones around the braai? We truly are blessed and with the rain having subsided for the time being, the golf course is in immaculate condition and still emerald green this late in May. Well done to our Winter Frolic Champs, Eddie Parker, Steve de Boer, Graham Liversage and Larry Wilensky. Thanks Lenn...

Breakfast - at the Wanderers Golf Club on a Sunday morning. For a "value for money" breakfast, come to the Wanderers on a Sunday morning. You can sit in the sun (either inside or out) and have a tasty breakfast surrounded by the wonderful scenery. There may of course, be a special competition or event in process but that adds to the enjoyment!

Congratulations to Thomas Aiken For those of you who do not know, Thomas Aiken won the Spanish Open last week, securing his maiden European Tour Win. Thomas has been knocking on the door for some time now and his patience and perseverance has finally paid off. This win for Thomas is not only special to him and his family, but to us at The Wanderers Golf Club, we are especially proud of Thomas as we have a long standing relationship at the Wanderers with him. Thomas is a past Wanderers Club Champion, winning in 2001, he was awarded Junior and Full Springbok colours as a member of the Wanderers Golf Club and represented us in scratch league until he turned pro. Thomas has always shown that he has the golf game to compete at the highest level, all that he needed was to break through and secure a major tour…
