Wanderers Golf Club News
Wanderers Mid Amateur Scratch League Side A great win by the Wanderers boys on Saturday against Randpark – 4 ½ to 3 ½ - maybe close but a win none the less! It was the first loss that Randpark has suffered this year in Mid Am and an important win for the Wanderers to get our season back on track – well done Gents! Jeff and his team served up a great supper and dops after the game – thank you sincerely to Jeff and the Wanderers staff! We are still lying fourth in the League standings after this latest result but I think/know we are just hitting our stride. Thanks go out to Gerry Terblanche for his efforts with the Mid Am side this year – Gerry will be moving back to Natal shortly so will not be available for any future matches for the Wanderers – our best…
Scratch league 2011- FIRST TEAM Having pretty much lost our top 5 players from 2009 and 2010 we had no doubt that 2011 would be a very tough year and one of consolidation. Although we started slowly (winning only 1 match out of 7) we lost 3 matches 5/4 and one 5.5/3.5 - all of which could so easily have gone the other way. In our favour with the result was that, with our exceptionally strong finish (we won 4 out of 4), but for a putt or two we could have been title contenders once again. It was good to have Shaun Stapleton and Bryn Flanagan back from the US for the last few games to add the solidity and confidence that we were lacking at the top end of the batting order. Their results speak for themselves. Our Most Valued Player was Darran Warner with an 82% success…

Scratch League - Second Side

Sunday, 26 June 2011
SCRATCH LEAGUE - SECOND SIDE The 2nd side had a great season. Of the 11 games played we won 9 and ended up second on the log. As such we have been promoted from the 3rd division up to 2nd. Every team member performed well and contributed to our overall result. A mention must be made of Darren Simpson who came down from the first side. He won all his games, playing number 2 in the 2nds. Not only did he win, but he absolutely thrashed his opposition and could always be relied on to give us 2 wins. Matthew Spacey also had a great season. He started off slowly with a few losses, but got stronger as the season progressed and ended up winning all his games in the latter part of the season. As with Darren, Matthew often walked off having beaten his opposition 5 and 4 or…

Swans

Friday, 24 June 2011
It's A Boy... Last week we had our bird expert, Dr Russell from the Bryanston Veterinary clinic, come down to the club and take blood from our lone swan in order to sex him. We have now had confirmation from the lab that he is intact a boy and we can now get a little girl as a mate for him. Our ladies section have sponsored our new swan mate and we have one on order, all things being equal we will be able to collect next week and get the 2 birds together. (See separate item and photo of them together.) According to the experts, swans only reach sexual maturity at around age 2. As our boy is now 8 months old, he is now at the best age to start settling down and will take easily to his new mate. Swans do mate for life and we will…

Castle Lite Nearest to the Pin

Castle Lite Nearest to Pin Last week Thursday, the Castle Lite Nearest the Pin was won by Neil "Spanner" Ransome. Well done Neil, I know you are going to enjoy your ice cold Castle Lites. Thanks - Lenn.
Update on drainage of the 12th hole As you are all aware, we have had excessive water for the past 2 seasons now and the result is that the water table is so high that the water has nowhere to go and has created wetland type areas on our golf course. One of the worst affected areas has been the 12th hole and getting from the tee to the fairway has posed some challenges of late. The good news is that Jackie and Darran have come up with a solution whereby they have an open trench in the area between 12 and 13, this area being out of play has allowed them to dig an open trench and to get the water moving down to the fairway across 12 where they have linked a pipe under the fairway and connected it to the drainage into 11 dam. Already I can…
