Mid Am update February 2012

Friday, 17 February 2012
Mid Am update February 2012 The Wanderers Mid Am team had a bye for the match scheduled in February so no match was played by us. The other teams all played and Glendower has emerged at the top of the table following their wins in both of their first two matches of the season. They have beaten both Roodepoort and Randpark to streak into an early lead in the log. We are due to play Glendower in our next match in March so it promises to be a pivotal match early in the season. Our match against Glendower is away at Glendower and scheduled for either 10th or 17th March – this date still to be confirmed as we have requested to bring the scheduled match forward. This because the 17th March clashes with the SAMS St Patrick day which many of the Mid Am boys would like to be…

Hollowtining Unfortunately, we do have a very necessary evil at this time of the year with regards to Hollowtining. We have chatted to Jackie and Darran and they have given us a brief break down as to what goes on when we Hollowtine. Why Hollowtine? We Hollowtine the greens to take the compaction out of the greens, air the greens, to stimulate new growth and to take out thatching, as we are now nearing the final stages of the hollowtine, I am blown away at how quickly the greens have recovered and believe that we will be putting on next to perfect green by next week. Process Step 1: Verti cut greens- meaning that we thinning the grass on the greens. Step 2: Hollowtine – This process takes out cores of grass from the green. Step 3: Seeding – Seed the greens with new grass. Step 4: Porous Ceramic –…

Up date on care of the course

Friday, 27 January 2012
With the growing season now in full swing and the availability of decent sod, our greens team are now able to start addressing some of the worst affected areas on the golf course, this week Jacky and Darran have rotavated and prepared the areas on the 4th fairway that was infiltrated with the fine grass. They will lay new sod and with decent water and fertilizer, we should have the areas grown in no time at all. With the new sodded areas, come other factors that determine the way in which the grass will grow, one of the major factors is sunlight and as a result, a very aggressive pruning programme has been implemented on the 4th, whereby the trees will be cut back, allowing more sunlight in and also promote more airflow, again promoting growth on the fairway. Visit the Gallery for more photos. (Thank you Lenn.)
Lucky Mulovhedzi – Lucky is receiving the award this month as he always does a fantastic job and he worked particularly hard during the hollow tining period. Lucky was also here on the 1st of January, when everyone else was on leave, to make sure that the greens did not burn – well done Lucky!
A Special Congratulations Goes To: Martin Moloeloe – Martin is receiving the award this month as he was doing 3 jobs over the December period – he was the course marshal, the starter and looked after the carts. He has done a great job, well done Martin!
