Milestones Over The Years

Course development in the past thirty years, design, layout and grass technology have undergone dramatic change. Prior to 1972 very little money seemed to be spent on course improvement. Here on the Highveld golfers resigned themselves to playing on brown fairways and brittle hard greens. The Americans were at the forefront of change and over the years have elevated golf course development and technology to a precise science.

The changes to The Wanderers Golf Club over the years include:

1939

Course opened with 10 playable holes

1942

Remaining 8 holes opened

1982

over seeding greens with pen cross

1989

replaced greens with pen link

1985

upgrade of dam on the 11th

1991

upgraded bunkers

1999

The greens were resurfaced, redesigned, increased in size and planted in areas of maximum sunlight. All bunkers underwent drastic re-shaping incorporating the principle of 'grass down" as opposed to sand up. Included in the redesign is a feature known as sub air. This equipment facilitates rapid removal of excess water from the greens. And also removal of toxic gases from the sub soil. Thus ensuring healthy root growth.

2004

Addition of fairway bunkers to holes 5, 7, 9

Covered the concrete drain behind the 17th green
